Always Something “There Is…”

(Kopa Records, KO 0100, 1992)

This recording was a first serious attempt to express myself as a pop/rock songwriter. The arrangements just naturally transpired as my very talented band worked through the music. Each song reflects the various moods and situations of my life at that particular time. From that point of view this record summarizes and addresses issues about myself, my family, my parents, feelings about love and anger, right and wrong. I think this is a very personal, “reality” oriented album. Please, listen and enjoy!

Mirek Kocandrle Early Works for Big Band, Vol.12

(Kopa Records, KO 0200, 2003)

Life is an evolution, a constant change. Change is another word for growth…all merely reflection of the Universe at large. This CD represents a period of change and growth of a musician.

In my early twenties the desire to write music began to grow in me. My professional peers at the time steered me towards the great writers. I’ll never forget the day I bought and listened to Quincy Jones’ recording Walking In Space Plus. After hearing this music there was no doubt in my mind what I wanted to learn. Between the years of 1975-1985, I immersed myself in the
study of composition, orchestration, and arranging at Berklee College Of Music. Early Works is the result of my listening and learning from the likes of Don Sebesky, Quincy Jones, Bob James, Charles Mingus, Michael Gibbs, Debussy, Blood Sweat & Tears, Duke Ellington, and Freddie Hubbard. This recording is a glimpse back in time. The players in the band were excellent
musicians at the time and many have gone on to have outstanding careers as writers and performers.

This recording features some the best New England and New York musicians. Just to name a few: Phil Wilson, Michael Piepman, Bruce Twiddy, Bruce Nifong, Aaron Heick, Bruce Arnold, Ed Tomassi Norman and Les Arbuckle.

I would also like to thank and dedicate this recording to the many individuals who played important roles in my musical and personal journey. Thank you to Mirek Bukovsky,Ted Pease, Denise Gibel, Abe Laboriel, David Cain, Herb Pomeroy, Keith Helgesen, Michael Gibbs, Ken Pullig, Buddy Aquilina, Kevin Kaska, Wes Hensel, Phil Wilson, Christer Norden, Jim Stinnett..and many more.
