Purpose and Plan

The focus of this project was to present artistically and commercially the most notable LP and CD works in the pop/rock idiom. This survey of pop/rock styles is meant to provide the fan, collector, musician, producer, disc jockey, music educator or historian with essential information about the best music produced and available within each particular style of pop/rock music over the last sixty or so years.

The information is presented in short, concise, yet comprehensive historical and chronological order and includes the major styles of popular music from past to present, something that the various surveys, playlists and other forms of pop/rock literature, however useful, have rarely done. The book is divided into 41 chapters and numerous subsections that represent established pop/rock styles recognized in today's music industry. Also included are brief lists of technological innovations and overviews of recording/production processes throughout the years that have played key roles in shaping the course and sound of particular musical styles.
